Instead of manually adjusting text or resizing frames one by one, this script lets you fix overset text across an entire document—or selected frames—in just a few clicks.

Two modes to fix overset text

✅ 1. Text Adjustment Mode (Recommended)

Automatically fixes overset text by gradually adjusting:

  • Font size
  • Tracking
  • Horizontal scale
  • Leading (automatically set to 120% of the font size when font size changes)

The script stops as soon as the overset is resolved or the minimum values are reached.

⚠️ 2. Frame Expansion Mode (Advanced)

Automatically fixes overset text by expanding text frames downward in small, controlled steps.

You can configure:

  • Expansion step size (mm)
  • Maximum expansion amount (mm)
  • Skipping master-page frames
  • Skipping frames that contain anchored graphics

Best for:

  • Structured layouts
  • Users who understand their text threading and page design

Important limitation (Frame Expansion Mode)

When using Frame Expansion Mode, please note:

  • If expanding a text frame pushes text forward in a threaded story and this causes overset text in a subsequent or final frame, that newly created overset text will not be processed automatically.

This is a structural limitation of threaded text in Adobe InDesign.

Frame expansion can create more space forward, but it cannot pull text back from later frames.

👉 For overset text at the end of a text thread, Text Adjustment Mode is recommended.

A notice dialog is shown after processing when this situation occurs.

Installation

  1. Download OversetFixerPro_v1.0.1.jsx
  2. Place it in your InDesign Scripts Panel folder:

macOS

~/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/<Version>/en_US/Scripts/Scripts Panel/

Windows

C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\<Version>\en_US\Scripts\Scripts Panel\
  1. Restart InDesign if needed
  2. Open Window > Utilities > Scripts and run the script

How to use

  1. Open your InDesign document
  2. Run OversetFixerPro_v1.0.1.jsx from the Scripts Panel
  3. Choose a mode (Text Adjustment or Frame Expansion)
  4. Select the scope (whole document or selected frames)
  5. Adjust settings if needed
  6. Click Run

A summary dialog will show how many frames were fixed and how many remain unresolved.

Notes

  • This script focuses on fixing overset text, not detecting it.
    Use InDesign’s built-in Preflight feature for detection.
  • Always test on a copy of your document in production environments.
  • Extremely aggressive settings may visibly change your layout.
